Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of sonography.
  • Depending on assigned department, meets education/training as required underestablished current American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) and/or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) guidelines.
  • Maintains current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification.
  • Must maintain one of the following: Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in fetal echocardiography; or Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS); or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS) or Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI); or
  • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS); or Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI); or Must be registered through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) and/or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) guidelines within twelve (12) months of hire
  • Able to perform routine echocardiology exams including, but not limited to, 2-D and M-Mode echocardiography and/or vascular sonography exams including, but not limited to, 2-D and M-Mode Imaging, Color Flow and Spectral Doppler, Carotid Ultrasound, Venous Doppler Upper and Lower Extremities, and Arterial Duplex Upper and Lower Extremities.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competency in routine noninvasive and/or invasive cardiology and/or vascular ultrasound diagnostics, and equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Performs routine assignments using existing procedure guidelines.
  • Receives instruction, guidance, and direction from more senior level sonographers.
  • Uses prescribed guidelines or policies in analyzing situations.
  • Has conceptual knowledge of theories, practices, and procedures within the job.
  • Recognizes normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology in conjunction with obtaining and documenting pertinent clinical and diagnostic information.
  • Works closely with the cardiologist to perform noninvasive and/or invasive cardiology and/or vascular diagnostic sonographic exams, and functions independently in the absence of the supervisor and/or manager.
  • Exercises professional judgment in performance of services and maintains a demeanor complimentary to quality care.
  • Delivers appropriate care while recognizing patient conditions and ensuring successful completion of procedures.
  • Complies with all state and federal regulations applicable to each modality.
  • Adheres to Baptist Health mission statements and commitment to excellence standards.
  • Assesses the patient’s physical condition and age specific needs.
  • Provides instructions that achieve patient cooperation and desired results.
  • Performs proper patient identification, acquires patient’s clinical history, and assures that the information is accurately documented.
  • Position patient, equipment, associated devices and manipulates technical factors to achieve high quality images for interpretation.
  • Assesses diagnostic images for technical quality, proper annotation, and patient identification, ensuring that all relative anatomy is demonstrated.
  • Comprehends and complies with Quality Control standards and participates in all Quality Control tasks.
  • Administers medical aid as required for any emergency situation.
  • Applies appropriate standard precautions and personal protective equipment to prevent cross-contamination of contagious diseases.
  • Utilizes all Baptist Health computer systems effectively and accurately.
  • Ensures safety of all customers.
  • Maintains accurate and precise documentation. Accurately record verbal and telephone orders from physicians in the patient record.
  • Communicates openly and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Participates in supervising student sonographers, orienting new sonographers, directing daily workflow, and participates in quality and safety initiatives.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Baptist Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Baptist Health policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the transporting of patients.
  • Follows established standards of practice for image processing and interpretation.
  • Assists in clerical duties, such as, but not limited to, printing reports, scanning documents, and scheduling of patients.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work area and equipment.
  • Maintains well stocked and organized work areas.
  • May be required to work at any Baptist Health facility.
  • Assists with other departmental duties and responsibilities as needed.
  • May be required to work afterhours and call shifts as needed.
  • May be required to assist with contrast administration if pertinent to department.
  • May be required to assist with intravenous (IV) insertion and removal for the administration of diagnostic contrast medication if pertinent to department.
