The position involves performing quality ultrasound procedures by utilizing proper positioning skills and technical factors, as well as a knowledge of anatomical structures pertinent to the patient population ranging from infants to geriatrics. The role includes conducting clinical assessments and diagnostic sonography examinations, using independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings. Cognitive sonographic skills are employed to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information, and images. The position also requires educating patients about the exams being performed and obtaining consent when necessary, while practicing proper safety in accordance with established standards. Each patient is assessed for proper preparation and scanning protocol for each ordered exam, and safety precautions are observed when handling patients and during examinations. Daily visual inspections of all equipment are performed to ensure safety and cleanliness, and the operation of 2D, M-mode, and Doppler ultrasound units with appropriate transducers is required to perform and adequately ascertain the location of specific organs, demonstrating recorded images that reflect accurate measurements. Basic patient care skills are also demonstrated, and verification of the correct patient using two patient identifiers is mandatory before beginning an exam.
