Emergency Care Center Technician Senior works with the RNs in the Emergency Room to provide care to patients. They have special skills beyond those of a basic Emergency Technician; for example, they can perform venipuncture, dress wounds, remove staples and sutures, and measure peak expiratory flow rate.

  • Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Gives basic care to patients in a compassionate manner.
  • Takes and records vital signs and reports any change or abnormal findings to the RN.
  • Gives treatments while maintaining respect for patient's privacy.
  • Collects specimens according to RN's instructions and procedure.
  • Assists patients to and from the bathroom.
  • Positions patients according to RN's instructions and changes position as frequently as ordered.
  • Assists with stringing IVs under the direction of the Emergency Department nurse.
  • Is responsible for the admission of the patient, including bringing the patient to the room and applying armband.
  • Instructs and explains patient/family orientation.
  • Helps patient collect personal belongings during discharge.
  • Collects patient's personal belongings during transfers and accompanies the patient to a new room.
  • Respects patient's right to privacy and confidentiality.
  • Answers call lights promptly and with a pleasant attitude.
  • Observes the RN performing procedures and nursing functions.
  • Checks restraints frequently and notifies RN of any issues.
  • Notifies RN of any issues with infusion pumps or patient complaints.
  • Assembles IV equipment and inserts Foley catheter using proper technique.
  • Assists RN in giving Foley catheter care.
  • Maintains a sterile atmosphere and demonstrates proper cleansing and preparation of wounds.
  • Assists physicians with suture repairs and suctioning secretions.
  • Applies pneumatic anti-shock trousers and cardiac monitor leads.
  • Handles fractures and applies splints and slings as ordered.
  • Reports any bleeding through casts or complaints of pain to the RN.
  • Ensures side rails remain up and the patient remains in bed after medication is given.
  • Applies anti-embolic hose appropriately.
  • Safely performs surgical shaves and skin preparation.
  • Takes vital signs for post-op care as requested by RN.
  • Assists with turning, coughing, and deep breathing as instructed by RN.
  • Performs EKGs and phlebotomy skills.
  • Contributes to maintaining a clean, safe environment for the patient.
  • Ensures beds are in low position and locked at all times.
  • Adheres to procedures for transferring patients and transporting them safely.
  • Maintains a clean environment by practicing good hand washing and adhering to isolation procedures.
  • Reports condition of un-cleanliness on the unit to Shift Coordinator.
  • Knows the use and operation of required equipment and maintains it.
  • Certification required.
  • Two (2) years of patient care experience in an acute care hospital or EMT field/Emergency Care Setting required.
  • EMT license required.
  • BLS required.
