The Early Onset Cancer Specialist position at Yale University is a pivotal role within the newly developing Early Onset Cancer Program at the Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital. This program is dedicated to addressing the unique needs of younger patients, aged 18-49, who are diagnosed with cancer. The specialist will focus on a range of goals including addressing psychosocial needs, developing innovative clinical care models, enhancing clinical trials, expanding research initiatives, and raising community awareness about early onset cancers. Reporting directly to the Early Onset Cancer Program Manager, the specialist will work collaboratively with the Early Onset Cancer Team to provide personalized support to patients and families with complex needs. In this role, the Early Onset Cancer Specialist will serve as a patient advocate and facilitator, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive, timely, and quality healthcare services. This includes working closely with clinical care and research teams from the point of diagnosis through the continuum of care. The specialist will be responsible for identifying patient needs, providing referrals, reducing barriers to care, and facilitating participation in research and clinical trials. Utilizing electronic health record (EHR) data, patient interviews, and additional screenings, the specialist will assess symptom burden, illness perception, financial distress, and self-efficacy to provide high-level support throughout the cancer journey. The position requires independent decision-making in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to adapt to rapidly shifting priorities. The specialist will develop strong relationships across various departments, including breast, gastrointestinal, gynecologic, radiation, surgical, and research teams, and will work with program leadership to enhance patient and family quality of life. Additionally, the specialist will be expected to travel to Smilow Cancer Care sites across Connecticut and participate in community outreach events as assigned. Training programs will be completed upon hire to ensure the specialist is well-prepared for their responsibilities.
