About The Position

Assists the Birth - Six Mental Health Consultant and GELC staff in the care and early education of children (birth to age 5) needing early intervention for social, emotional and behavioral development at the Grandview Early Learning Center. Creates and maintains a safe, healthy and culturally appropriate learning environment for young children.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and at least one year of experience in working with children having social, emotional and/or behavioral deficits; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certificate in basic S.T.A.R.S. training required, or must be obtained within 12 months of hire date.
  • Must be able to meet the requirements of the state of Washington child care licensing personnel requirements.
  • Must be able to pass state background check clearance to work in a child day care center and be able to obtain a food handler’s permit.
  • Specific coursework and/or documented successful experience working with children having social, emotional and/or behavioral deficits. Applicant must demonstrate a strong willingness to participate in additional training.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Food handler’s permit.
  • First Aid/CPR certification required, or must be obtained within two weeks of employment.
  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted Washington State driver’s license. Driver’s license must not contain any restrictions that would prevent the employee from driving a GSA vehicle.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must have warm, welcoming, and friendly personality, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, be respectful of all cultures, and be able to relate positively to both young children and adults. Ability to discipline in a kind and respectful manner.
  • Commitment to working with children in a developmental setting and a sincere desire to have a meaningful affect on their lives.
  • Good communication, problem solving and priority setting skills.
  • Must have a warm, welcoming and friendly personality relating well with both adults and children.
  • May be required to successfully pass a background check prior to hire, and periodically throughout employment thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree or CDA preferred, or must be willing to obtain Associates Degree or CDA within four years of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Actively engages with and encourages children during all activities of the day including: morning greeting; meal and snack times; learning and play time whether in the classroom or outdoors.
  • Greets arriving and departing parents, children and co-workers with a smile and positive attitude.
  • Works closely as part of Mental Health Promotion Team (MHPT) and classroom staff to coordinate positive behavioral and social/emotional interventions in classrooms and other settings as needed.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity at all times when engaging with children, understanding that harsh tones and threats are inappropriate behavior for staff at Grandview.
  • Assists in planning, preparing and adjusting the learning environment to meet the needs of all children, especially those with developmental delays.
  • Maintains professional attitudes and loyalty to the Center at all times.
  • Attends staff meetings, workshops, conferences, courses, all in-service training and other aspects of professional growth when recommended by the center manager.
  • Considers individual children in relation to their cultural and socio-economic background and developmental level.
  • Keeps information about families confidential
