About The Position

The Early Childhood Substitute Teacher supports the lead teacher in providing a nurturing, safe, and engaging learning environment for young children, typically ages 1 1/2-5. The Sub works directly with children to promote their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development through play-based learning and structured activities. The role also involves assisting with classroom management, supervising children, and maintaining effective communication with families and colleagues. This position will most likely lead into a full time salaried position.

Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent (required); an Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience working with young children in a preschool or childcare setting is preferred.
  • Skills: Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to work collaboratively with a team of educators. Comfortable with basic computer tasks for record-keeping and communication.
  • Attributes: Patience, creativity, and enthusiasm for working with young children. A positive, energetic attitude and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certifications: CPR and First Aid certification preferred, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
  • Background Check: Successful completion of a background check and fingerprinting (as required by local regulations).

Responsibilities

  • Support Lead Teacher: Assist the lead teacher in implementing daily lesson plans, classroom activities, and special projects. Provide additional support to children who may need extra attention or guidance.
  • Classroom Management: Help maintain a positive and orderly classroom environment, ensuring children follow routines and participate in activities. Foster positive relationships with children by using age-appropriate guidance strategies.
  • Supervise Children: Actively supervise children both indoors and outdoors to ensure their safety and well-being at all times, including during free play, snack times, transitions, and outdoor activities.
  • Facilitate Learning Activities: Lead small group activities, assist with individual learning tasks, and encourage creativity and problem-solving. Assist with hands-on activities, such as arts and crafts, reading, music, and sensory play.
  • Promote Social and Emotional Development: Support children in developing social skills like sharing, cooperating, and resolving conflicts. Provide comfort and reassurance to children as needed.
  • Communication: Collaborate with the lead teacher and other staff to ensure a smooth classroom operation. Communicate with parents regarding children's progress, activities, and any concerns as directed by the lead teacher.
  • Record Keeping: Assist with maintaining daily attendance, notes on child development, and other documentation required by the preschool or licensing agency.
  • Maintain a Clean and Safe Environment: Ensure the classroom is clean, organized, and safe, including sanitizing toys, cleaning surfaces, and preparing materials for activities.
  • Professional Development: Stay informed of current trends in early childhood education, attend staff meetings, and participate in ongoing professional development as required.
