About The Position

Perform a full range of educational/non-educational duties for the specific intensive needs of one student. Provide support as needed including instructional support, lunch/recess, and personal needs. Provide access to information, and communicate and facilitate the development of social and emotional well-being for a child with deafblindness. This position is considered temporary and is based on the needs of one individual student.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience working with special needs children or licensed special education teaching experience.
• Intermediate knowledge of deafblindness and its impact on learning and development.
• Intermediate verbal and written communication skills.
• Advanced interpersonal relations skills.
• Advanced organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others.
• Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
• Ability to work one-on-one and in small groups with students.
• Ability to work with medically fragile or behaviorally intensive children.
• Ability to provide high levels of patience, compassion, and understanding.
• Ability to effectively facilitate the deafblind intervener intervention process.
• Criminal background check and fingerprinting required for hire.
• All certifications, licenses, and registrations must be valid and unexpired.
• Comprehensive, specialized training in deafblindness.

Nice To Haves

• Associate’s degree or equivalent.
• Experience working in a school district or educational setting.
• Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• National Intervener Credential.
• Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Intervener certification.
• CPR and First Aid certifications.
• Basic sign language skills.
• If working in the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, basic bilingual skills and experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse students and families.
• Racially conscious and culturally competent with the skill, will, capacity, and knowledge to commit to a culture of continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct support (1:1) to a student with deafblindness as a part of an educational team and as indicated by the student's individualized education plan (IEP). Follow the student's IEP and the modifications and instructional techniques recommended by special education and related certified staff. May provide instruction in the student’s home as deemed appropriate by the IEP team.
• Provide support to the special education teacher such as preparing materials, assisting in the preparation of the IEP, assisting in the adaption of the curriculum to the students' individual learning level, and developing worksheets for the individual student. Attend regularly scheduled planning and feedback meetings with the teacher and related team members. Provide support to classroom teachers as appropriate for the needs of the individual student and, on occasion, the classroom as directed by the teacher.
• Provide consistent access to instruction and environmental information that is usually gained by typical students through vision and hearing, but that is unavailable or incomplete to an individual who is deafblind.
• Provide access to and/or assist in the development and use of receptive and expressive communication skills. Facilitate the student's communication with others by explaining and modeling the student's specific communication system, acting as a bridge to the world and creating a safe and supportive environment that encourages successful interaction.
• Assist and escort the student in bus transference and in other situations throughout the school building. Provide supervision to the individual student in the cafeteria and at recess.
• Facilitate the development and maintenance of trusting, interactive relationships that promote social and emotional well-being. Provide support to help a student form relationships with others and increase social connections and participation in activities.
• Maintain some student records pertaining to behavior and progress toward IEP goals.
• Perform personal need duties including bathroom assistance, diapering, feeding, and lifting individual student as needed. May be required to monitor or notify appropriate individuals regarding changes in student's health.
• Serve as a resource to other staff on issues related to deafblindness.
• Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
