About The Position

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Early Career Substation Civil Engineer for our Austin, TX office. Be involved in projects with our Power & Energy Substation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges. This Opportunity Takes part in providing local technical assistance for the design, development, and construction of electrical infrastructure projects in the public and private sector. Tasks may include basic assistance with the research, design, concept development, and construction of utility-scale electrical substations, including site development, grading and drainage, foundations, access roads, and associated civil infrastructure. Generates accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project and supports civil design deliverables under the supervision of senior engineers. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. Your Impact Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from project sites, surveys, civil drawings, GIS data, subsurface utility information, topographic mapping, geotechnical reports, and other reference materials used for substation civil design and construction. Assist with performing basic professional civil engineering work related to evaluating proposed and existing site conditions to support the design and construction of electrical substations and related infrastructure, in conformance with applicable codes, standards, and permit requirements. Perform routine engineering functions and provide entry‑level technical assistance related to grading and drainage, earthwork, foundations, access roads, stormwater management, and yard development, accounting for safety and constructability. Assist with verifying site characteristics and providing basic technical assistance on civil engineering, design, and construction issues encountered during project execution. Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, civil drawings, calculations, and field or site visit logs. Comply with safety guidelines and site‑specific procedures applicable to civil engineering field activities, including data collection, surveys, construction observations, and engineering studies. Complete training on assigned tasks, tools, and internal WSP processes. Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience, including coursework, internships, or co‑op experience related to civil engineering or site development.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills with the ability to apply fundamental engineering concepts to real‑world problems.
  • Familiarity with basic civil engineering principles and processes supporting design/build and construction activities.
  • Awareness of relevant civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and documentation requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with engineering and non‑engineering professionals.
  • Effective self‑leadership with attention to detail, organization, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation tools, civil engineering software, spreadsheets, and related technologies.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
  • Prior internship or co‑op experience related to civil engineering, site development, or infrastructure projects.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
