About The Position

The primary purpose of the English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher is to provide supplemental English language development instruction to Multilingual Learners in the assigned district(s). The ESL Teacher supports the implementation of the district’s Language Assistance Plan and collaborates with general education staff to ensure equitable access to core instruction. A secondary goal of this position is to provide academic, social, and emotional support to multilingual students and their families in order to promote student success, strengthen family engagement, and connect families with appropriate school and community resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education required
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate required
  • Endorsement in English as a Second Language or bilingual endorsement in Spanish required OR Willingness to obtain the required endorsement within three (3) years of employment (must be enrolled in an approved program within one year of hire)
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with disadvantaged or at-risk children preferred
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred
  • Ability to advocate for culturally and linguistically diverse populations
  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with teachers, administrators, and support staff
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with students, families, and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated instructional and classroom management skills
  • Previous training or experience with the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Identify and support potential Multilingual Learners in assigned district(s).
  • Assist with screening and assessment of English language proficiency for new and returning students in accordance with Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Entrance and Exit Protocols and district procedures.
  • Assist with the administration of the annual WIDA ACCESS for ELLs assessment during the state-designated testing window.
  • Collaborate with district administrators to review assessment data, evaluate the Language Assistance Plan, and make decisions regarding student entry, exit, or re-entry based on MDE guidelines.
  • Deliver effective English language development instruction aligned to district curriculum and responsive to the linguistic and academic needs of multilingual students.
  • Monitor and document student progress and provide evidence of growth toward individual language and academic goals.
  • Communicate regularly with multilingual families, promote family engagement, and assist families in accessing school and community resources.
  • Submit daily time studies (PARs), completed biweekly, documenting students served and instructional focus areas.
  • Maintain and submit accurate multilingual enrollment and service data to the program administrator on a monthly basis.
  • Participate in professional learning communities and ongoing professional development to strengthen instructional practices for multilingual learners.
  • Complete assigned responsibilities within established timelines and adhere to all Van Buren ISD policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Administrator of Multilingual and Migrant Services and/or the VBISD Superintendent.
