About The Position

The Durham Sports Commission (DSC) is a private, not-for-profit organization operated by Discover Durham to promote and market Durham County as a sports destination. The commission recruits sporting events and activities through business development programs and works to increase the capacity of local events to enhance economic impact and maximize utilization of facilities in Durham County and surrounding communities. As the Assistant Director, you will be a key member of our team, helping manage projects, support major sporting events, and provide superior internal support. This is an excellent opportunity for an eager professional looking to build experience in sports management, nonprofit leadership, project management, and event operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree Sports Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience with internal operations, project coordination, and budget management (internships count!)
  • Strong organizational, communication (phone/virtual/verbal/written), and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 tools, Dropbox and project management software (Asana preferred)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Team-oriented and self-motivated
  • Willingness to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays during events
  • Ability to assist in event setup, which may include lifting or moving materials up to 40 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead high-impact projects from start to finish which includes event bid documents, facility development research, advertising and the execution of DSC-owned and operated events.
  • Play a central role in managing the grants and incentives program through coordinating committee meetings, evaluating program success, and overseeing budgets that support local sports growth.
  • Help bring, and retain, major regional and national sporting events to Durham by supporting recruitment efforts and executing exciting, community-driven events.
  • Lead and grow the volunteer program with recruiting, training, and managing event volunteers who power successful sporting events.
  • Oversee the DSC’s internship program while managing key programs such as the One Team, One Durham Fund.
  • Analyze and report on impact by leading CRM and Economic Impact reporting to showcase the success and community value of DSC events.
  • Support leadership operations by taking meeting minutes, preparing presentations, tracking budget updates, and ensuring meetings and communications run smoothly.
  • Take on new challenges as opportunities arise, contributing wherever needed to support the team’s success.
