About The Position

Hood Industries, Inc. is a blend of wood manufacturing and distribution concerns that include plywood and lumber manufacturing plants and twenty-three specialty wood product distribution operations located in fifteen states. We are hiring a Dry Sorter Operator at our lumber mill located in Waynesboro, MS. This position is responsible for sorting lumber and ensuring that tools, machines, and equipment are well maintained. Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED preferred.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Ability to make decisions quickly utilizing hand, eye, and foot coordination.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and responsibly.
  • Ability to understand, clearly communicate, and follow all safety rules and policies.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Collaborate with other team members to ensure efficient production.
  • Able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Perform tasks such as walking, climbing, pushing, pulling, grasping, and standing for up to 12 hours per day.
  • Able to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, or reach with body, arms, and/or legs.
  • Able to work in a noisy, dusty, and non-temperature-controlled environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. throughout the work shift.

Responsibilities

  • Operates sorter at production target speeds.
  • Monitors all sorter bays to make sure boards are dropping correctly and lowers bays as they become full.
  • Screens lumber as it enters and flows through the sorter to make sure lumber is sorted by length and dimension.
  • Observes the trash bay and reports excessive number of boards being dropped. Trouble shoots to determine problems (i.e., broken bay, tipple not firing, etc.).
  • Drops lumber from the bays onto the haul out chains ensuring lumber packs are not “split” or damaged.
  • Keeps lumber flowing through the sorter to prevent cross-ups and jams and quickly and safely clears cross-ups and jams to avoid downtime.
  • Reports excessive amount of or constantly reoccurring (even if minor in nature) issues that are causing downtime.
  • Understands the importance of machine guarding (handrails, chains, individual metal guards), inspects work area to make sure all guards are in place while working, and stays out of guarded areas unless properly locked out.
  • Reports damaged equipment to the supervisor or lead person.
  • Wears all the required PPE, especially fall protection harness, when in the sorter.
  • Follows all company safety rules and policies and keeps assigned area clean (catwalk, sorter cubbies, under sorter haul out chains).
  • Carefully performs lock out and strap changing procedures.
