About The Position

Issues driver's licenses, permits and identification cards, concealed weapon licenses, Dealer/Salesman and other special identification; record data, collect money, perform data entry for various records and citations, process and register sex offenders, perform opening and closing procedures to include balancing daily cash, check and credit card receipts for the Driver's License Division of the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office. The principal function of an employee in this class is to determine eligibility for and issue driver's licenses, concealed weapon licenses, register sex offenders, and perform various office functions. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Level II Driver's License Lead. Considerable independent judgment is granted to this position, within the established guidelines. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Idaho and Federal motor vehicle laws regarding license application, eligibility, examination, restrictions, withdrawals, and appeal procedures, etc.
  • The operation of personal computer and various software applications for word processing, spread sheets, and data base management
  • Modem office practices and procedures
  • Various filing and record keeping systems
  • Agency policies and procedures maintenance of resources including supplies and equipment
  • Operate standard office equipment such as a copy machine, telephone, adding machine, cash register
  • Maintain moderately complex records and complete forms relating to driver's licensing, sex offender registration and concealed weapon licensing as well as various other records maintained in the course of the job
  • Operate driver's license equipment such as an eye test machine, digital camera, computer and printer
  • Operate standard office equipment such as copy machine, telephone, adding machine and cash register
  • Type 35+ words per minute
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
  • Proofread documents with accuracy
  • File and process documents both alphabetically and numerically with accuracy
  • View documents and determine the authenticity and validity of documents
  • Reproduce/enter into computer information from personal identity documents and other documents accurately and precisely
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in spoken and written English
  • Maintain courteous, professional and effective working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, the public and/or any other representatives of external organizations
  • Read, compose and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos
  • Be versatile and be able to change tasks in a moment's notice, make independent judgments and decisions when guidelines and procedures are not available and to remain calm under pressure or in a crisis situation
  • Remain calm and courteous with the public and officers in all situations

  • Ability to pass a background check through the Sheriff’s Office as well as a drug test
  • Graduation from high school (diploma) or GED equivalency
  • Ability to type 35+ words per minute
  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work

Responsibilities

  • Issues class D and commercial driver's licenses, give written and visual tests, identification cards, issues various special identification cards, driver's training permits, instruction permits, concealed weapons licenses, and salesman identification cards and sex offender registrations
  • Views and examines documents for authenticity
  • Proofread documents for errors
  • Collects payments for various fees from customers
  • Takes photographs for licenses, permits and sex offenders
  • Finger printing for Sex Offender Registration, Concealed Weapons License and Employment
  • Orders supplies from Idaho Department of Transportation and office supply provider
  • At the end of the day, counts the total cash, credit cards and checks, balances the daily receipts
  • Performs data entry of county citations, concealed weapon licenses, and sex offender records and filing of records, routes a copy of citations and DUI paperwork to the prosecutor and court
  • Examine criminal history information to determine eligibility for concealed weapon license issuance
  • Responds to questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with Elmore County policies, procedures, and safety practices
  • Answers all phone calls concerning driver's licenses, concealed weapons, sex offender registration, and driver's training
  • Performs other related duties as required
