Transit and Ground Passenger Transportation

The Driver position at Gadabout Transportation Services, Inc. involves providing transportation services for adults over 55 and individuals with disabilities within Tompkins County. This role requires driving a small bus, assisting passengers, and ensuring their safety and comfort during transit. The position is available for both part-time and full-time schedules, with training provided as necessary.

  • Drive a small bus and assist passengers on and off the vehicle from pickup point to their destination.
  • Secure wheelchairs and mobility devices to the vehicle using securement devices.
  • Learn to use computer schedules efficiently.
  • Keep written records on mileage, number of passengers, fares, and fuel usage.
  • Check the operating condition of the bus before starting trips and report any mechanical defects to the immediate supervisor.
  • Complete mandatory trainings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Must possess a commercial driver's license with passenger endorsement to carry up to 14 passengers (CDL Class A, B, or C with a P endorsement).
  • Ability to meet the requirements contained in Article 19-A of the N.Y. State Vehicle and Traffic Law.
  • Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations.
  • Ability to operate a bus under all driving and road conditions.
  • Complete Gadabout training, testing, orientation, and review of policy and procedure manual.
  • Understand how to assist people with disabilities and older passengers on and off the vehicle.
  • Neat appearance and ability to deal courteously and effectively with passengers.
  • Possess initiative, resourcefulness, tact, good judgment, mental alertness, emotional and mental stability.
  • Ability to work independently and dependably.
  • Physical condition must be commensurate with the demands of the position, including bending over, pushing, and getting in and out of the bus.
  • Must pass a DOT Physical at least every 2 years, or as indicated by a DOT certified medical examiner.
  • Practice good communication skills with office staff regarding passenger schedule changes or other issues.
  • Maintain the bus and leave it in proper order at the end of each shift.
  • A good sense of humor is desirable.
  • Training provided if necessary.
  • Flexible scheduling options for part-time and full-time work.
