ABOUT OUR DISTRICT The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and she is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of educators to partner with her in moving the district toward its goals. The Syracuse City School District represents 35 schools and programs, including 6 high schools, 6 middle schools, 6 K-8 schools, 13 elementary schools, and 4 alternative education programs, serving approximately 19,000 students Pre-K–12. Of these students, 82.3% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 20.1% are served by the Office of Special Education, and 83% are students of color. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS The work involves responsibility for driving an automobile, van or light truck in transporting passengers or materials. Under immediate supervision, the employee operates an automobile or small truck for the purpose of chauffeuring department officials or collecting and delivering messages, records, and materials. The position requires lifting, handling and loading materials which may be indoors or outdoors. A Driver-Messenger may be responsible for a small amount of cash to be used to purchase items from merchants who are on a delivery route. Instructions are usually received in the form of written or oral requests for specific items to be picked up or delivered. The employees may participate in routine clerical tasks in the office of assignment between deliveries. Work is reviewed upon completion for prompt delivery of materials requested and the safety of operation of the vehicle. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES Operates passenger vehicle or light truck in delivering to and from various departments, records, materials, or other supplies. Receives written requisitions for petty cash purchases and accounts for any expenditure. Performs routine clerical tasks in the office of assignment between deliveries. Gives minor routine maintenance service to vehicles, checks it each day for gasoline, oils, battery, tires and general running condition and cleanliness. May be required to handle, position, or move materials. May load and unload trucks, vans or cars of such items as crates, machinery, furniture, or equipment by physically lifting the items or by operating a cart, hand truck, or similar equipment. May move items to and from storerooms or during the pick-up and delivery of materials. May perform team lifting of heavy or bulky objects. May act as chauffeur for departmental officials.
