About The Position

The Department of Transportation is actively looking to fill a Driver License Examiner role in Dauphin County. This position is essential to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) as it involves conducting standardized tests to assess the skills and competencies of applicants seeking non-commercial driver licenses. The examiner plays a crucial part in enhancing highway safety by ensuring that only qualified individuals are granted licenses. In addition to administering these evaluations, the examiner also provides support at the Driver License Center by assisting customers at the counter. A vital aspect of this role includes scrutinizing identity documents to prevent identity theft and fraud, thereby safeguarding the integrity of the licensing process and contributing to overall public safety. In this position, you will assess the physical and driving qualifications of applicants, as well as evaluate the mechanical condition of vehicles to ensure they meet the established safety standards for driving. You will conduct various vision tests, including telebinocular and color perception assessments, to gauge applicants' visual capabilities. Additionally, you will administer both non-commercial and commercial driver license knowledge examinations to verify that individuals possess a solid understanding of the Vehicle Code and traffic signage. You will also oversee the non-commercial driver license pre-trip, skills, and driving tests, adhering to departmental standards. Your responsibilities will include scrutinizing applications, registrations, and permits for any signs of irregularities or fraudulent activity, as well as determining vehicle specifications to ensure the correct tests are conducted. Furthermore, you will inspect motor vehicles for compliance with safety features such as inspection stickers, lights, and windshield wipers. You will review a variety of documents, including applications, birth certificates, Social Security cards, marriage certificates, court documents, proof of residency, and various documents issued by U.S. and foreign authorities, to verify their authenticity. Utilizing multiple systems and databases, you will authenticate identity documents to establish an individual's identity and eligibility for a driver's license or identification card. Your role will also involve identifying fraudulent activities and preventing the creation of false identities and identity theft. After processing test results and applications, you will issue driver licenses and identification cards to qualified applicants. Additionally, you will provide customers with essential information regarding driver's license renewals, duplicates, out-of-state transfers, motorcycle licenses, and the requirements for obtaining and maintaining a commercial driver's license, including knowledge of various restrictions and endorsements. Upon request, you will generate Restoration Requirements Letters for customers who visit in person, ensuring they receive the necessary guidance and support. Interested in learning more?
