About The Position

This is skilled and technical work involving firefighting, emergency medical response, and vehicle operation. The Driver Engineer is responsible for safely operating and maintaining fire apparatus and equipment, as well as delivering emergency care and protecting life and property during fire, rescue, and hazardous situations.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Have a valid Certificate of Compliance as outlined in the Florida Division of State Fire Marshal Uniform Fire Safety Rules and Standards Chapter 4A-37, or a verification letter indicating that the individual meets the above requirements, and will be issued a Certificate of Compliance from the Florida Division of State Fire Marshal, Bureau of Fire Standards and Training Office.
  • Is at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a full-time paid Firefighter in an organized, public sector, career Fire Department within the State of Florida.
  • Meets the requirements in Florida Statute 401.281 as this position may be required to drive an advanced life support vehicle in the event of an emergency.
  • Possess and maintain a valid license as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic issued by the State of Florida Department of Health at time of appointment and be in good standing with the Office of Medical Direction (OMD).
  • Have not accrued 12 points within 24 months or 18 points within 36 months.
  • Have not been convicted on alcohol/drug-related offenses within 36 months.
  • Have not been convicted of two (2) alcohol/drug-related offenses within 10 years.
  • Have not had a suspension, revocation, or restriction due to moving violations or alcohol/ drug related problems, including failure to take a breath test within the 36 months prior.
  • Have not had two (2) failures to pay fines within 36 months.
  • Have not had two (2) seatbelt violations within 36 months.
  • Have not had three (3) lapses of insurance within 36 months.
  • No serious traffic violations such as leaving the scene or driving on a suspended license within 36 months.
  • Must provide proof of insurance when required to use their personal vehicle as part of their daily job duties.
  • Possess a valid American Heart Association CPR "BLS for Health Care Providers" card or the American Red Cross Professional CPR card.
  • Possess a valid American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support card and Pediatric Advanced Life Support card or HandTevy certificate.
  • Possess a valid Emergency Vehicle Operator Course Certification card or a recognized 16-hour course that is equivalent.
  • Possess a valid State of Florida Pump Operator Certification.
  • Aerial Operations Certificate (45hr) FSFC #BFST703/ATPC703.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of employment.
  • Possess the following National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications: ICS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System, ICS-200: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents, IS-700: National Incident Management System, An Introduction, IS-800: National Response Framework, an Introduction.
  • Demonstrated ability to stay calm, make quick decisions, and perform under pressure.
  • Considerable knowledge of vehicle mechanics and emergency response equipment.
  • Skilled in the use of firefighting and rescue tools.
  • Strong familiarity with county roadways and geographic layout.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, such as lifting victims, hoisting gear, climbing ladders, or forcing entry.
  • Clear and effective communication skills—both verbal and written.
  • Mathematical ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide units of measure.
  • Ability to function well in teams and exercise independent judgment.
  • Emotional resilience and respect for others in high-stress scenarios.
  • Must meet all criteria of the current "Selection Standards for Firefighter Positions" as promulgated by the Polk County Human Resources Division.
  • Must obtain and maintain Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Awareness certification through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) (for employees hired into this position after January 1, 2013).
  • Applicants/employees shall be fingerprinted and subject to personal background investigation procedures to ascertain an evaluation and determination of moral character according to Chapter 4A-37 Firefighters Standards and Training.
  • Must have a telephone while employed with the Fire Rescue Division as employee is subject to call in emergencies.
  • Applicants who have not been employed by the Polk County Fire Rescue Division in a firefighting capacity will be required to certify by affidavit that he/she has been a non-user of tobacco or tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application as required by Florida State Statute 633.412.
  • External candidates must successfully complete the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) (exam date can be no more than one calendar year from the hire date).
  • External candidates must complete the FireTEAM testing and a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) at the time of application.

  • Maintain a valid certification as a Paramedic issued by the State of Florida Department of Health.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to fire and emergency calls; dons protective gear and operates firefighting and rescue tools.
  • Drives emergency vehicles to scenes safely and efficiently; maintains equipment logs and ensures operational readiness.
  • Operates heavy-duty diesel pumper and aerial trucks, managing water flow, pressure, and apparatus systems.
  • Conducts search and rescue operations in various structures, manages fire suppression systems, and utilizes high-rise building equipment.
  • Administers emergency medical care and assists in patient extrication, ventilation, and salvage operations.
  • Participates in physical fitness, training, fire drills, pre-fire surveys, and recordkeeping for emergency preparedness.
  • Maintains apparatus and division equipment, supports evacuation efforts during disasters, and assists in arson investigations.
  • Completes additional duties as assigned.
