About The Position

The primary function of the Driver is to operate various commercial vehicle and container combinations for extended periods of time, over long distances between company and customer facilities, terminals, yards and/or work sites. The Driver’s main role is to pick up, transport and deliver freight in a safe and efficient manner. This individual will report to the Transportation Manager; Drivers are also supervised and lead by the Dispatchers.

Requirements

  • Must have a current Class A or B driver’s license
  • English fluency with regards to clear communication with the customers, coworkers, or the public; must possess accurate written communication via text, email or company documentation
  • Candidate must pass a pre-employment physical, background and credit check and pass all DOT standards, including but not limited to a driving record check
  • Ability to drive up to a 10-hour shift per day and up to 60 hours per week
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions such as extreme heat or cold, dusty, dirty and/or wet conditions
  • Able to fulfill flexible scheduling requirements as determined by the manager and / or business needs of the operation
  • The Company desires a candidate who has shown a stable job history, dependable attendance practices and whose references can state is a trustworthy individual

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years of similar industry experience preferred, ideally in a similar role / industry / fast paced environment
  • Experience in the recycling industry, ability to identify metal materials, as well as van, flatbed, gondola and roll-off experience a plus
  • Demonstrated ability as a high performer: ability to provide courteous and professional customer service and engage in positive and proactive interactions with fellow team members or the public

Responsibilities

  • The Driver is the single direct contact responsible for good public relations with the customers and the general public;  he or she is expected to act professionally at all times
  • Executes customer service requests and material logistics; reports any customer complaints immediately to the Dispatchers; performs job per instructions given verbally or in writing, including those on manifests, bills of lading and/or other shipping documents to determine the location and time of delivery
  • Drops, hooks, spots or otherwise interchanges equipment for loading or unloading at various locations; weighs all transported material entering and leaving the facility
  • Communicates professionally (verbally and in writing) with others including company representatives, fellow Drivers, and customers
  • Reads, writes and performs basic math to properly complete tickets, bills of lading, trip sheets, logs, incident reports and other paperwork; this also includes effectively filling out required transportation documentation and the ability to read and understand maps or receive driving directions from the Dispatcher in order to arrive at the correct customer location
  • Demonstrates a basic mechanical knowledge of a tractor/trailer and/or commercial vehicles in order to properly communicate repair requests to the mechanics; additionally, understands how to shift manual transmission engines, control the steering wheel, operate the brake and accelerator pedals, and is able to back and park a tractor-trailer unit per safety expectations
  • Performs all duties in accordance with company policies and procedures, and complies with all federal, state and local regulations for the secure and safe operation of a commercial motor vehicle, equipment and cargo; follows established Department of Transportation (DOT) Regulations, including DOT equipment inspections, hooks/unhooks trailers, and enters / exits the tractor / trailer safely
  • Performs responsibilities while working relatively long hours and performing repetitive work in a tractor; this may require the Driver to work with variable work/rest cycles due to frequent deadlines and meeting delivery schedules, be exposed to environmental extremes, and encounter day-to-day stressful situations
  • Must be able to perform the following physical functions 1) Must be able to routinely lift 50 or more lbs. throughout an 8-10 hour shift (may request assistance or “team lift” for more than 50 lbs.); examples include lifting and repositioning materials, loading and unloading drums, gaylord boxes and wooden skids; 2) Must be able to climb and descend a tractor catwalk to make trailer connections; 3) Must be able to climb into the back of the trailer and position and balance oneself on uneven material to ensure that loaded materials are secure; 4) Must be able to manually tarp the load
  • Must demonstrate competency in all aspects of the job and company objectives
  • Demonstrate understanding of company policies, rules and trainings
