About The Position

The Drill Operator has a critical role within Martin Marietta’s aggregate operations, responsible for the safe and efficient operation of high-powered drilling machinery to prepare mine sites for blasting (shots). This individual ensures that blast patterns are accurately drilled to meet production requirements while adhering to the company’s strict safety standards and MSHA regulations. The ideal candidate is a safety-conscious, initiative-taking professional who can maintain complex equipment and adapt to the physical demands of a quarry environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or relevant experience.
  • 3 years of experience in heavy equipment operation is preferred; specific experience with Kelly Bar or electric-powered drills is a significant plus.

  • Regularly lift and carry 50–75 lbs repeatedly without assistance.
  • Perform "general physical activities" including climbing stairs and ladders (sometimes up to 100 feet), pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, and crawling.
  • Wear standard safety gear at all times, including a hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection.
  • All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry and dusty.
  • Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.

Responsibilities

  • Safely and efficiently operate track-mounted Kelly Bar rotary drills or similar equipment using water mediums for flush.
  • Execute precision drilling based on specific blast patterns and layouts provided by the engineering or blasting team.
  • Operate auxiliary equipment as needed, including loaders, haul trucks, and excavators, to support site operations.
  • Perform routine daily and monthly inspections of the drill and associated pump systems.
  • Conduct field maintenance such as greasing, replacing drill bits, and monitoring fluid levels.
  • Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on hydraulic and electrical systems to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain accurate drill logs, recording hole depth, drilling time, and geological anomalies encountered.
  • Assist the blasting crew with the loading and "stemming" (filling) of blast patterns with aggregate or specialized materials.
  • Prepare the drilling area to ensure a stable and safe surface for the rig and personnel.
  • Accurately maintain drill logs, recording hole depths, geological changes, and material usage.
  • Champion Martin Marietta’s "Guardian Angel" safety culture, ensuring a zero-harm work environment.
  • Participate in site safety inspections and plant safety programs.
  • Follow all federal MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) rules and company-specific safety protocols.
