About The Position

The Drafter IV provides direct technical support for US Army research operations. This role works closely with design originators in preparing drawings of unusual, complex, or original designs that require a high degree of precision. The Drafter IV performs unusually difficult assignments requiring considerable initiative, resourcefulness, and drafting expertise, and provides direct technical support for US Army research operations. This position may have direct reports or supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Eight (8) years of experience in drafting to include layouts, illustrations, wiring diagrams and electrical, machine and sheet metal shop fabrication drawings.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check and drug screen.
  • Must be a Citizen of the United States of America.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a general-purpose government vehicle.
  • Position requires the ability to pass and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • Must read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Drawings include complex design features that require considerable drafting skill to visualize and portray.
  • Assignments regularly require the use of mathematical formulas to compute weights, center of gravity, load capacities, dimensions, quantities of material, etc.
  • Through working experience shall have a competent understanding of all elements of design, both mechanical and electrical, and be able to function independently with minimal assistance from engineers, technicians and designers.

  • Successful completion of an academic year at a technical school may be substituted for one (1) year of experience. The maximum amount of experience for which education may be substituted is two (2) years.

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with design originators in preparing drawings of unusual, complex, or original designs that require a high degree of precision.
  • Perform unusually difficult assignments requiring considerable initiative, resourcefulness, and drafting expertise.
  • Provide direct technical support for US Army research operations.
  • Produces drawings to support manufacturing, assembly, installation and operations.
  • Exercises independent judgement in selecting and interpreting data-based knowledge of the design intent.
  • May interpret general designs prepared by others to complete minor details.
  • May provide advice and guidance to lower-level drafters or serve as a coordinator and planner for large and complex drafting projects.
  • Works from sketches, models, existing parts, assemblies, and installations, and verbal information supplied by an engineer, technician, or designer to determine the most appropriate views, detail drawings, and supplementary information needed to complete assignments.
  • Selects required information from precedents, manufacturers’ catalogs, and technical guides.
  • Lay out plan, profile, and detail appurtenances required; and notifies supervisor of conflicting details in design.
  • Process Engineering Release Notices (ERN’s) and Engineering Change Order (ECO’s) along with general drafting duties including maintaining all associated drafting files, logs, and lists.
  • Occasionally interpret general designs prepared by others to complete minor details.
  • Performs all other position-related duties as assigned or requested.
