About The Position

The Department of Public Works (DPW) Dispatch Production Assistant will assist the Dispatch Manager with setting up and maintaining the systems that allow 24 hour operations and radio communication with DPW and the general radio traffic of Black Rock City (BRC). They will provide the community with a trusted source of knowledge in their communications, and act as an ally for solutions and productivity. They will serve as an administrative aid to the Dispatch Department and will coordinate, document and organize information pertinent to DPW Operations. This role will also support the DPW Manager on Duty when applicable. This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is: From August - September : Full-Time , Non-Exempt , based in Black Rock City, Nevada . The deadline to apply for this role is 5:00 pm Pacific on April 3rd .

Requirements

  • Prior experience with radio traffic control and radio technology.
  • A disposition for handling stressful workloads and potential emergency situations in a focused, positive, and calm manner.
  • Ability to monitor high-volume radio traffic on multiple channels.
  • Clear, concise and professional with strong verbal communication skills; Able to evaluate the receiving party, tailor communication style, thoughtfully respond to needs for support, and address a broad range of personality types.
  • Flexible, able to switch from conversation to conversation quickly and easily without losing the thread; excellent note-taking skills that captures all the necessary details.
  • Operates with behavioral integrity and discretion of sensitive information; maintains tidiness in work ethics and the work environment.
  • Able to receive and integrate feedback into action and maintain an enthusiastic demeanor that inspires by example.
  • Strong working knowledge of Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive), Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to learn, use, and routinely update any online tools, applications and documents, proactively asking clarifying questions to smooth any process or system as needed.
  • Comfortable handling real-time data entry for large amounts of information and managing several streams of communication simultaneously.
  • Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
  • Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada
  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.
  • Experience or knowledge of DPW and other Burning Man departments.

Responsibilities

  • Administration (55%) Manage calendars and timelines, schedule meetings, calls, events, etc.
  • Create and track internal and cross-departmental correspondence.
  • Coordinate deliverables and resource requests.
  • Facilitate meetings by creating agendas, taking notes, identifying and tracking action items and announcements, and organizing them to be easily accessed.
  • Follow the standards as outlined by management when working on new and updating documentation and make sure to capture all relevant information in its appropriate place.
  • Organize and maintain Google Drive and files; Work with Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive), Microsoft Word and Excel, and any additional online tools, technology or applications specific to this role as required.
  • Live Radio Operations (40%) Maintain an open conduit of communication between the DPW and other departments of BRC by keeping the airwaves tidy of small talk/ overly drawn out conversations, directing traffic and connecting callers, answering lost callers, and providing factual, up-to-date information.
  • Monitor radio transmissions and offer support to callers as necessary and with professionalism.
  • Set a personal example of proper radio conduct for all radio users, being direct while still modeling kindness.
  • Keep regular and clear communication with the Dispatch Manager through direct interface; attend meetings as needed.
  • Maintain a clear, professional, positive, and constant radio presence while on shift.
  • Update and log an accurate record of communications in the Dispatch Operations Livelog.
  • Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%) Work with the Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations.
  • Adjust workflow to support changing safety protocols as directed.
  • Participate in crew/manager meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence.
  • Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
  • Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
  • Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.
