About The Position

The License Specialist II position at the Texas Department of Public Safety involves performing moderately complex licensing and permitting work in a Regional Operations Field office. The role includes reviewing license and permit applications, ensuring compliance with regulations, and communicating with customers. The specialist will administer tests, approve applications, and provide information regarding driver licensing laws and procedures. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one year of general office, volunteer, or customer service experience.
  • Valid driver license required; Texas license must be obtained within specified time if hired with an out-of-state license.
  • Certification as a Commercial Knowledge Examiner (CCKE) required within the first six months of employment.
  • Working knowledge of TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, and policies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information responsibly.

Nice To Haves

  • Cash handling experience preferred but not required.
  • Bilingual skills for interpreting for foreign language speaking applicants.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and review license and permit applications.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable policies, administrative codes, and statutes.
  • Communicate with external and internal customers regarding licensing processes.
  • Administer written and visual tests for applicants.
  • Prepare application forms and collect fees for licenses and permits.
  • Answer general inquiries about driver license laws and procedures.
  • Screen application forms to ensure applicant qualification.
  • Approve applications based on state regulations and agency policies.
  • Conduct basic checks of applicants' physical driving capabilities.
  • Inspect motor vehicles for safety prior to road tests.
  • Issue licenses and permits and collect appropriate fees.
  • Input applications and payments into computer systems.
  • Advise applicants of suspensions, cancellations, and revocations.
  • Administer road skills examinations and evaluate applicants' driving abilities.
  • Provide administrative and technical assistance related to licensing requirements.
