About The Position

The Section Supervisor I, DNA Technical Leader position at the Texas Department of Public Safety involves advanced forensic science management work in the DNA discipline. The role includes overseeing laboratory work, managing personnel, providing technical leadership, and ensuring quality assurance in forensic analyses. The supervisor will also be responsible for training staff, preparing technical reports, and testifying as an expert witness in court. This is a temporary, full-time position based in Austin, Texas, requiring a strong background in forensic science and management skills.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Master's level degree in Biology, Chemistry or Forensic Science related area.
  • Successfully completed 12 semester or equivalent credit hours covering biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and statistics or population genetics.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of progressively complex work experience in a forensic laboratory in the field of DNA Analysis.
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience as a qualified analyst conducting and/or directing analysis of forensic samples.
  • Must possess a valid driver license from state of residence.
  • Working knowledge of TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures related to crime laboratories.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with validation studies is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical oversight in the section including analysis, instrumentation, validation, training, and quality management.
  • Manages personnel in the section regarding work assignments, priorities, expectations and serves as the Technical Leader for the discipline.
  • Participates in personnel decisions, trains employees, and monitors their performance.
  • Oversees the laboratory/section by reviewing laboratory reports and work records; ensures that quality work is performed and accurate reports are issued.
  • Ascertains that evidence or database samples are secured, properly marked, and sealed; inventories evidence per guidelines.
  • Conducts liaison with area law enforcement personnel and prosecuting attorneys to meet needs.
  • Provides summaries of certain laboratory activity on a monthly or quarterly basis.
  • Assigns casework to personnel and may conduct staff meetings.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of laboratory staff for court appearances.
  • Requests replacement of equipment when needed.
  • Attends work regularly and observes approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
