About The Position

This project involves characterizing bacterial communities from environmental samples, first generating, and then utilizing community composition data generated by completing next generation sequencing. This project will likely involve collecting environmental samples, completing DNA extractions, using PCR to amplify a region of the 16S rRNA gene, sequencing the resulting products, and then analyzing the data along with previously collected data. This will likely also include the use of machine learning tools to make predictions as well as the use of automation in the lab to enable this work on a high throughput scale. Through the completion of this project, students will gain skills in fieldwork, molecular biology, and bioinformatics.
