About The Position

Under the supervision of Argonne staff scientists, engineers, postdoctoral researchers and graduate students the SULI student will test the operation of a new ultra-high vacuum (UHV) system for producing continuously reloaded optical tweezer arrays of ytterbium. This platform is being developed as part of the Q-NEXT project for applications in quantum networking and sensing including the demonstration of remotely entangled networks of ytterbium optical atomic clocks for sensing the quantum mechanical nature of gravity. The student will test the basic operation of the UHV oven by performing spectroscopy of the emitted atomic ytterbium beam, implementing transverse cooling and longitudinal “Zeeman” slowing of the atomic beam, and implementing a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap (MOT). These systems will supply subsequent traps with a continuous source of laser-cooled atoms, enabling highly parallelized quantum networking operations for high-rate, high-fidelity generation of entanglement between systems separated by several kilometers. Education and Experience Requirements The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States. Applicants must be: Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution. Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution. Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins. Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident at the time of application. If accepting an offer, must pass a screening drug test.
