About The Position

Membranes can reduce energy use for industrial purification by almost 90%.However, their application is challenged by a fundamental phenomenon called fouling. Fouling in membrane is caused by buildup of rejected matters on the membrane surfaces and pores which substantially impedes the membrane throughput during its operation. The nature and the dynamics of fouling depend son the complex, intricate relationship between the membrane surface chemistry, the fouling species and the operating condition. There have been some empirical and mechanistic models that have attempted to corelate these complex correlations, but there has been no common model that fits all. In this project we aim to develop machine learning models that would be trained on literature data to establish simplifying correlations between membrane surface chemistry, the fouling species and the operating condition. The SULI intern will work in a team of Argonne distinguished fellow, staff scientist, Argonne fellows, postdocs and graduate students. This project will involve collaborators from other divisions at Argonne as well. Education and Experience Requirements The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States. Applicants must be: ‒ Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution. ‒ Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or ‒ Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution. Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins. Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident at the time of application. If accepting an offer, must pass a screening drug test
