About The Position

Wave simulations, even at 1D, can be very intricate because of the hyperbolic nature of the PDE system. Often time, the simulations may exhibit the so called blow-up phenomena when stability criteria are violated. Some of the stability criteria, such as the CFL condition, are well known with clear statements that are easy to check, whereas others can be obscure and often specific to the discretization techniques used. This project aims to investigate these less known conditions that may trigger instability in wave simulations. Such investigation is particularly important with the current trend towards reduced precision computing, since the larger round-off errors are more likely to excite the unstable modes inadvertently, leading to blow-up simulations, even if these modes are not present in the input data.
