About The Position

The Corrections Assessment Specialist position at the Illinois Department of Corrections focuses on improving the reintegration outcomes of individuals in custody. This role involves conducting risk assessments to understand the needs and risks of individuals, guiding their programming, and developing case plans to support their transition back into society. The specialist will engage in motivational interviewing and collaborate with mental health professionals to address immediate concerns, while also implementing evidence-based programming initiatives.

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in social work, psychology, or a directly related field.
  • One year of professional direct-client casework experience, preferably in a correctional setting, including conducting risk and needs assessments.
  • Experience performing client intake interviews, assessments, or other evaluative processes; professional individual or group counseling; or providing reentry services.

Nice To Haves

  • Three years of professional experience using motivational interview techniques.
  • Three years of professional experience in case planning.
  • Three years of experience conducting risk and needs assessments.
  • One year of professional experience evaluating evidence-based programs.
  • One year of work experience in a correctional, law enforcement, residential, human services setting, or similar field.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct motivational interviews with assigned individuals in custody to complete comprehensive risk, assets, and needs assessments.
  • Evaluate the provision of designated programs to the individual in custody population.
  • Complete 30-day follow-up Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) assessment for individuals in custody.
  • Prepare complex written and/or oral reports for review by other professional and administrative staff.
  • Attend staff training required by the Department.
  • Participate in crisis intervention to resolve immediate or urgent individual in custody concerns and make referrals to a qualified mental health professional.
  • Develop and implement new program initiatives including evidence-based programming, cognitive behavioral programming, and re-entry programming.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
