About the position

The Youth Transportation Officer Trainee position at the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is designed for individuals who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of youth. This role involves supervising detention rooms, providing crisis intervention counseling, ensuring court security, and transporting juveniles safely to various facilities across Maryland. The position aims to support the mission of DJS in transforming young lives and fostering safer communities through effective transportation and supervision of youth in the juvenile justice system.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise detention rooms and provide crisis intervention counseling.
  • Ensure court security and escort juveniles as needed.
  • Transport juveniles to and from institutions, courts, group homes, and other facilities.
  • Coordinate transport schedules in conjunction with court appointments and other obligations.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status.
  • Ability to pass a thorough background check, including fingerprinting and drug testing.
  • Completion of the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course for DJS support staff during the probationary period.

Nice-to-haves

  • Six months of experience transporting youth in a secure residential juvenile facility.
  • Six months of experience transporting youth or adults to and from courts or other designated locations using State vehicles.
  • Full Maryland Correctional Training Commission certification.
