About The Position

Under the supervision and direction of the Director and Deputy Director of Landscape Maintenance and the supervising Regional Superintendent, supervises the operation and maintenance of a geographical division of the District. Actively oversees and coordinates District personnel. Ensures that all facilities meet the recreational needs of the general public. Inspects and ensures proper and safe usage and maintenance of District vehicles and equipment. Directs Assistant Division Superintendents and field personnel in setting and achieving divisional goals, mapping out work projects and formulates plans and schedules for future operations of the division in conjunction with administration’s direction. Knowledge of and ability to implement personnel policies and procedures of the District including disciplinary and grievance procedures. Monitoring in the application of pesticides. Responsible for daily work plans, inspection reports and other administrative reports through the use of Microsoft Suite. Trains all personnel on field equipment and in methods for the firefighting and suppression of fires.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma, GED, or higher.
  • Must possess at least 8 years of full-time work experience in the field of maintenance, landscaping, or forestry.
  • Must possess at least 3 years of full-time work experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must possess a valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver’s License with no Air Brakes restriction.

Nice To Haves

  • Possess a valid State of Illinois Pesticide Operator or Applicator License.
  • OR
  • Possess a valid Feller I Chainsaw Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares work schedules and assigns work crews and office personnel to various duties within an assigned geographical area or division of the District.
  • Supervises field work, i.e., clean up and disposal of refuse and illegal dumps; litter pick up, cleaning of shelters, picnic areas, comfort stations and privies; mowing and trimming of public-use areas, ; tree pruning; trail maintenance; pothole repair; sign replacement and repair; and fence repair and installation.
  • Onboards/offboards new employees; this includes providing training and familiarizing the employee with the division and staff.
  • Supervises and organizes snow removal, plowing, shoveling, sand and salt spreading within the assigned Division.
  • Daily inspection of Division resources to determine the need for improvements in maintenance operations.
  • Generates daily, weekly and monthly reports for the Landscape Maintenance Office using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • Consults with Facilities and Fleet Management team regarding divisional concerns and/or projects and fleet matters; fills out work orders for repairs and requisitions for supplies.
  • Provides great customer service, greeting permit holders and other preserve users and responds to their inquiries or concerns within a timely manner.
  • Communicates with Forest Preserve Law Enforcement team on security and/or vandalism concerns.
  • Registers, tracks hours and maintains court-related documents for the District’s Community Service Work Program, which includes training and monitoring community service/adult probation workers in the field.
  • Attend mandatory and suggested continued education training essential to the position., i.e. CPR/First Aid, Defensive Driving, NSC Accident Investigation, etc.
  • Attend court hearings to testify in matters when violations/fines will be issued to offenders related to District vandalism and/or damage.
