We are searching for a Division Head to lead our Applied Sustainment Division (AST) Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy/Marine Corps, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). This position may be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a non-tenure Research Faculty. The AST Division is an interdisciplinary group of engineers, software developers, functional business process experts, and IT professionals who collaborate to develop technologies for logistics, maintenance, and lifecycle asset sustainment for DoD systems. We conduct applied R&D efforts focused on acquiring data, turning data into information and knowledge, and securely delivering that data, information and knowledge to the right warfighter at the right time to support logistics and maintenance. Our research spans the spectrum from the warfighter edge to the heart of the enterprise.

  • Have a working technical understanding of the wide range of Applied Sustainment Technologies for DoD applications.
  • Actively lead and participate in the development of funded project opportunities with new sponsors.
  • Lead and/or assist in the development of proposals and projects that further our knowledge and expertise in the area of Applied Sustainment Technologies.
  • Mentor and encourage creativity in innovative technologies and research.
  • Conduct labor planning activities to ensure all departmental staff and faculty are appropriately and sufficiently tasked.
  • Review and analyze Division level financial project and overhead funding/expenditure data.
  • Recruit, retain, and define performance expectations of department head staff and faculty.
  • Evaluate the professional growth and performance of Department Heads through performance reviews and coaching conversations.
  • Contribute to the design, development, implementation, and analysis of technical engineering products, systems, and subsystems.
  • Investigate and evaluate practical applicability of scientific theories and engineering principles.
  • Conduct experiments/tests in the laboratory/field to test, prove, or modify theoretical propositions.
  • Initiate or contribute data/analysis/design for use in technical reports, documents, proposals, papers, or presentations.
  • Demonstrated success leading a team of engineers/scientists.
  • Demonstrated success developing new business, including proposal writing and technical presentation skills.
  • Active SECRET government security clearance; TS or above is preferred.
