About The Position

The Division Chief of Fire Prevention and Education (Chief Fire Marshal) is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and supervision for the Office of Emergency Services, Fire Marshals Division. This role involves managing daily operations, developing and implementing programs, and overseeing budgetary authority while ensuring compliance with fire codes and safety regulations. The position requires strong leadership skills and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders, including executive level administrators and the public.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire & Safety Engineering Technology, Fire Science, or related discipline.
  • Six years of fire inspection, fire operations, or related experience, including two years of supervisory experience.
  • North Carolina Firefighter II certification.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
  • HAZ-MAT Operations certification.
  • Fire Inspector Level III certification.
  • Fire Officer II certification.
  • Fire Investigation Technician certification.
  • Certified Fire Investigator or IAAI Certified Fire Investigator certification.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, addressing employee concerns and performance issues.
  • Coordinates, assigns, and reviews work, establishing work schedules and maintaining standards.
  • Determines fire and life safety educational priorities and allocates resources accordingly.
  • Prepares and administers budget proposals and expenditure projections.
  • Completes incident reports ensuring accuracy and completeness of information.
  • Administers a training record system that meets legal requirements and is easily accessible.
  • Develops policies to support the training program to achieve set goals.
  • Inspects and evaluates fire scenes and documentation related to incidents.
  • Responds to fire code, law, and life safety inquiries from citizens.
  • Reviews and evaluates building plans and fire protection system plans for compliance with safety criteria.
  • Conducts inspections of public, commercial, and residential structures for compliance with fire codes.
  • Performs inspections of complex fire hazard complaints.
