About The Position

The Districtwide Translator/Interpreter plays a vital role in fostering equitable access to education by breaking down language barriers and promoting inclusive communication. Guided by Hoquiam School District's four pillars, this position nurtures meaningful relationships, supports engaged learners, provides adaptive pathways to services and opportunities, and strengthens community connections. The Translator/Interpreter ensures families, students, and staff from culturally diverse backgrounds can collaborate effectively, empowering all students to thrive academically and socially.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent; associate's or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Fluency in English and at least one other language commonly spoken in the Hoquiam community. Spanish preferred.
  • Experience in translation and interpretation, preferably in an educational or community setting.
  • Must score in the advanced level of a proficiency test provided by the school district prior to being hired.
  • Pass OSPI Course, Interpreting in Educational Settings with 80% proficiency.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with students, families, and staff from diverse cultures.
  • Proficiency in using translation software and tools, such as CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) tools.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Suite.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of educational terms and school-related processes preferred.
  • Background check required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted communication bridge between students, families, and staff.
  • Build rapport with families by providing culturally sensitive translation and interpretation.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with professionalism and integrity.
  • Support parent engagement by making school and district information accessible in families' primary languages.
  • Facilitate communication that helps students and families fully participate in the learning process.
  • Provide interpretation during parent-teacher conferences, IEP meetings, student support meetings, and family events.
  • Translate district and school materials (letters, forms, notices, newsletters, and other documents) to ensure families remain informed and engaged.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of different cultures and their impact on communication.
  • Provide real-time interpretation during a variety of school and district events to ensure accessibility for all families.
  • Support families in navigating programs, services, and resources that meet their students' unique needs.
  • Adapt communication strategies to meet the needs of diverse audiences and language levels.
  • Strengthen partnerships between the district and families by supporting bilingual communication at community meetings and outreach events.
  • Collaborate with staff and community partners to share information and resources in multiple languages.
  • Help families connect with school and community resources that support student well-being and success.
  • Act as a cultural mediator, addressing any cultural differences that may arise during the interpretation process.
  • Represent the district in a positive, welcoming manner that builds trust and inclusion.

  • This position is not expected to exceed 630 hours a year and will not include any benefits.
