About The Position

The District/Zone Fire Management Officer (Wildland Firefighter) position is responsible for planning and executing fire management programs at a high complexity level. The officer will provide leadership in the fire safety program, coordinate fuels management plans, and ensure that the program aligns with ecosystem management principles. The role involves monitoring fire season predictions and behavior, directing fire management operations, and serving as a member of the district/zone Leadership Team to develop long-range planning.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • This is a drug testing designated position; subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Prior wildland firefighting experience is required.
  • Willing to live/work in remote locations.

  • Commercial driver's license (CDL).
  • Physical or medical examination.

Responsibilities

  • Plans work to be accomplished, sets and adjusts short-term priorities, and prepares schedules for completion of work.
  • Provides leadership in the fire safety program based on doctrinal principles.
  • Directs a fire management program with a high complexity level.
  • Serves as a member of the district/zone Leadership Team responsible for overall long-range planning.
  • Coordinates fuels management plans and activities with other district programs.
  • Ensures the fuels management program is consistent with ecosystem management principles.
  • Monitors fire season severity predictions, fire behavior, and fire activity levels.
  • Directs all aspects of the district/zone's fire, fuels, and aviation management program.
