About The Position

District Sign Tech I: Performs entry-level transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records of signs and materials and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and standard practices and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor. District Sign Tech II: Performs skilled transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records, ordering of signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision details. District Sign Tech III: Performs skilled transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records, ordering of signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. District Sign Tech IV: Coordinates and performs advanced skilled transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Serves as a lead worker and trains other technicians. Work includes coordinating and maintaining inventory and records, ordering of signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to a supervisor.

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License without transmission restrictions and an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Must have or obtain an "N" endorsement within 30 days of either obtaining the Class A CDL or within 30 days of the date of hire.
  • District Sign Tech I: No experience required.
  • District Sign Tech II: 1 year sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent.)
  • District Sign Tech III: 2 years sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent.)
  • District Sign Tech IV: 5 years in sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).
  • Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions
  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products
  • Issues signs to maintenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moves signs and related materials
  • Maintains expense records and inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment
  • Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties
  • Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs
  • Performs and maintains inventory of signs
  • Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck
  • Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations, and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
  • Orders supplies and materials from district shop.
  • Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs).
  • Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs
  • May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
  • Trains other technicians on sign installation and safety procedures
  • Orders signs from the regional sign shop.
  • Assists in scheduling and assigning work.
  • Serves as a lead worker by advising, training and instructing employees in shop policies and procedures; acting as a resource for complex questions; presenting workflow and operational updates to the supervisor/manager; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operations coverage.
  • Coordinates and conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs).
  • Coordinates and inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommends repairs.
  • Coordinates, performs and maintains inventory of signs.
  • Measures and calculates amount of materials needed.
