About The Position

District Sign Tech I: Performs entry-level transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records of signs and materials and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and standard practices and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor. District Sign Tech II: Performs skilled transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records, ordering of signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Requirements

  • No experience or education required.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • Must be able to report for duty upon notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

  • 1 year sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Issues signs to maintenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moves signs and related materials
  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products
  • Operates radios
  • Performs and maintains inventory of signs
  • Performs preventative maintenance on sign truck
  • Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other department guidance
  • Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance related work as requires; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
  • Orders supplies and materials from district shop
  • Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs)
  • Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs
