About The Position

The District Safety Coordinator plays a key role in keeping NDOT employees safe by leading and supporting safety efforts across the District. This position partners closely with supervisors and field staff to promote safe work practices, improve accident prevention, and ensure compliance with state and federal safety regulations. The coordinator is actively involved in construction and maintenance operations, provides practical safety guidance, and leads ongoing training on a wide range of workplace safety topics. Working alongside the NDOT Statewide Safety Coordinator, this role helps shape a strong, consistent safety culture that protects employees and supports NDOT’s mission statewide. Pay range is $27.346 to $40.311 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints, if approved. Requirements

  • Any combination of training and/or experience that will enable the incumbent to possess the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • A general qualification guideline for positions in this class is a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering and broad experience in safety investigation and training or equivalent education and experience.
  • Certification in various safety courses may be required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
  • Overnight travel may be required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills used to identify and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, procedures, operating manuals, and maintenance instructions.
  • Ability to write routine and complex reports and develop and analyze statistical data.
  • Uphold and support organizational goals and values.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, walk long distances and work long hours, possibly weekends, in outdoor temperature extremes.
  • Ability to interact courteously and professionally with all coworkers, contractors, and the traveling public.
  • Must be able to report to work within 45 minutes of notification under normal conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Education or experience in occupational health and safety management.
  • Experience in providing employee training.
  • Experience with creating dashboards or data analysis to identify accident trends.
  • Experience with highway construction and maintenance operations.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Responsibilities

  • Implementing NDOT’s safety programs and policies in partnership with supervisors and teammates.
  • Reviewing accidents and injuries to identify improved prevention strategies
  • Reviewing active NDOT maintenance and construction activities for proper traffic control and personal protective equipment use
  • Ensuring District compliance with all applicable state and federal safety regulations.
  • Leading quarterly Safety Team meetings
  • Overseeing monthly safety trainings for construction and maintenance staff on topics, such as fire safety, electrical hazards, chemical handling, weather related risks, and fall prevention.
  • Working closely with the NDOT Statewide Safety Coordinator to align safety initiatives, compliance approaches, and training efforts, ensuring consistency across the state.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
