Job Summary The District Medical Director works in collaboration and reports to the Territory Medical Director and directly oversees medical and clinical activities for Cano Health within their assigned district. This role blends clinical leadership with a strong emphasis on physician development, education, and mentorship. The District Medical Director exercises professional judgment to oversee the performance and practice of medicine by our employed or contracted physicians and ensures that such services are delivered in a safe, competent, and efficient manner for our patients. A core responsibility of this position is to cultivate a culture of continuous learning and professional growth among providers, driving improved clinical performance, enhanced patient experience, and better health outcomes.

Requirements

  • Must have a Medical Degree from a Accredited Medical School or DO School.
  • Board Certification/Eligibility in Family or Internal Medicine.
  • Experience in Medicare Advantage Risk and Value Based Care Management.
  • Experience leading and successfully managing providers.
  • Proficiency in Electronic Medical Records, Excel, Word, and other IT systems.
  • Skilled in oral and written communications with associates, patients, and other individuals in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Other languages might be required.
  • Must be able to stand, sit, walk, and occasionally climb.
  • The incumbent must be able to work extended and flexible hours and weekends as needed.
  • Physical demands include the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to perform essential functions such as typing, standing, sitting, stooping, and occasionally climbing

Responsibilities

  • Lead educational initiatives, as recommended by the VP of Quality Care & Medical Integrity to improve provider performance, quality of care, and adherence to standard of care practices.
  • Ensure noncompliant PCPs are identified and addressed weekly through structured clinical review and follow-up discussions.
  • Perform medical record audits quarterly to evaluate compliance with established clinical pathways. Noncompliant PCPs require monthly audits.
  • 3 Days with patients and 2 administrative days
  • Must have managed care experience
  • Conduct monthly discussions with PCPs identified as having clinical management opportunities and assign relevant continuing medical education (CME) courses to support improvement.
  • Conduct monthly meetings to review physician scorecards and KPIs as it relates to ED/admissions, referral management, HEDIS gaps, patient visits, patient satisfaction surveys, new enrollments, and create individualized improvement plans.
  • Work with the Territory Medical Director to develop and implement quality improvement projects, and provide education as it relates to quality of medical record documentation and HEDIS audits.
  • Assist the Territory Medical Director in optimizing utilization of Cano’s services and resources.
  • Participate in Medical Director team meetings to review clinical performance, discuss interventions and policies, and implement Cano Health protocols.
  • Participate in the implementation of policies and procedures as required by regulatory agencies that govern the practice of medicine in collaboration with the Territory Medical Director, CMO, Legal, and Human Resources Departments.
  • Ensure compliance with adverse incident reporting requirements and escalates to Operations, Territory Medical Director, and Risk Management.
  • Meet monthly with Health Center Managers and DOs to review operational and quality results, including NPS scores, provider schedules, and patient access metrics.
  • Collaborate with district administrative staff (District Directors of Operations, Project Managers, Provider Support Specialists, etc.) as it relates to the locking of patients medical records, and address EHR-related tasks.
  • Evaluate and address medical grievances from providers, and coordinate solutions in partnership with Territory Medical Director, VP of Operations, and escalates to CMO.
  • Participate in provider onboarding, clinical skills workshops, and targeted training sessions to address performance gaps.
  • Ensure and maintain proper clinician staffing at all assigned medical centers.
  • Experience leading and successfully managing providers.
  • Oversee and provide leadership to a group of providers within the district.
  • Serve as the primary mentor for district physicians, fostering a supportive environment for clinical excellence, professional growth, and patient-centered care.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, providing actionable feedback, measurable improvement plans, and recognition of achievements.
  • Duties as assigned.
