About The Position

The Transportation Engineer position involves performing engineering work in various functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, and maintenance. The role ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. Employees will interact with governmental officials and private entities. The level of supervision required varies by position, with higher levels indicating more independence and accountability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science accepted by TX PELS.
  • Transportation Engineer I: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.
  • Transportation Engineer II: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.
  • Transportation Engineer III: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.
  • Transportation Engineer IV: 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.
  • Valid driver’s license required for driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer required.
  • Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within one year of date of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional engineers licensed in another state must meet Texas license requirements within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Answers technical and policy questions related to bridge inspection and maintains bridge inspection data; analyzes data and provides summaries.
  • Reviews designed and detailed drawings of bridges and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians.
  • Assists districts with bridge inspection-related matters.
  • Schedules, assigns and oversees bridge inspection activities.
  • Coordinates and/or monitors consultant contracts related projects.
  • Develops short-term and long-term goals and coordinates planning activities and resources required to meet goals.
  • Maintains a critical bridge list and coordinates with the Bridge Division, area engineers and other district staff on critical findings involving state-maintained bridges.
  • Monitors contract performance, evaluates contract deliverables, reviews billing documentation, and prepares evaluations of consultant performance.
  • Performs highly advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
  • Performs, reviews and monitors detailed investigations, data collection, analyses and coordination of bridge related research.
