About The Position

The County of Riverside Office of the District Attorney is seeking post-bar law clerks (Law Clerk II) for the Spring and Fall of 2025, with the potential for these positions to transition into entry-level prosecutor roles upon passing the California Bar Exam. The role involves performing legal research and providing assistance to licensed attorneys, with a focus on supporting the legal process in various offices throughout Riverside County, particularly in the Coachella Valley and Colorado River areas. Candidates must be enrolled in or have recently graduated from an accredited JD or LLM program and are expected to work approximately 40 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Students enrolled or in their final year of an accredited JD or LLM program, or recent graduates from such programs.
  • First-time testers expecting to take or awaiting results for the California State Bar Exam in February or July of 2025.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Certificate for Practical Training of Law Students from the California Board of Bar Examiners.
  • Previous intern or Law Clerk experience with the County of Riverside Office of the District Attorney, or an active bar license in another jurisdiction.
  • Must be eligible to obtain a valid California Driver's License.

  • Knowledge of discovery obligations as a prosecutor and the process of obtaining and disclosing discovery in a timely manner.
  • Ability to prepare and organize extensive legal discovery, evidence, and exhibits for court presentation.
  • Skill to prepare and conduct preliminary hearings and present misdemeanor trials to a jury or judge.
  • Ability to devise trial strategy and recognize factual, ethical, and legal issues in a case.
  • Ability to negotiate with defense attorneys regarding case dispositions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform legal research in the preparation of legal briefs, opinions, and similar documents.
  • Prepare drafts and legal memoranda summarizing studies of court decisions, state statutes, County Ordinances, and legal opinions.
  • Review documentary evidence and prepare opinions; prepare correspondence and reports.
  • Assist with case preparation including witness and victim contact, and evidence preparation.
  • Attend and appear on the record in court.
  • Prepare motions; work in the case management system; assist with other case-related duties as assigned.
