About The Position

As Distribution System Operator, you will plan, coordinate, and supervise switching and tagging operations, issue clearances, monitor system loads, and support emergency restoration efforts for the electric distribution system. You will coordinate activities with CONVEX and other regions when system conditions cross jurisdictional lines and may serve as a Switching Director as assigned. Training Program Candidates are hired as apprentices and undergo a 12–18-month training program, including written exams and board evaluations. Successful completion is required to remain in the position. Requirements

  • High school diploma or the equivalent is required.
  • Three (3) years of related experience is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of switching/tagging procedures and understanding of distribution system operations.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable PC-based and other technologies, with the ability to learn future technologies.
  • Ability to analyze electric distribution system problems and act accordingly.
  • Ability to act as customer advocate by assuring accurate and timely information is communicated on ETRs (Estimated Time of Restoration) and restoration remarks.
  • Successful candidates will be required to pass pre-employment System Operator/Power Dispatcher (SO/PD) Test.
  • Successful completion of a 12–18-month training program, including written exams and board evaluations, is required to remain in the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in electrical discipline preferred.
  • Electrical utility experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain the Network Management System (NMS) and SCADA equipment.
  • Write, check, approve, and issue switching, grounding, and tagging instructions.
  • Analyze trouble calls and initiate corrective actions, including personnel callouts.
  • Monitor circuit and substation loads and voltages to ensure safe operation.
  • Support emergency restoration efforts, including Division EOCs and RMTs.
  • Maintain accurate system diagrams and databases reflecting current status.
  • Coordinate switching with CONVEX and other internal/external stakeholders.
  • Prepare and maintain operational records and reports.
  • Assist in training new operators and support NMS instruction.
  • Develop and maintain operating instructions in collaboration with Grid Management.
  • Operate PC-based and mainframe applications.
  • Coordinate dispatching with internal teams and external agencies (e.g., police, fire, DEP).
  • Ensure/Approve accurate and safe switching/tagging instructions and issue clearances.
  • Efficiently direct restoration activities, following company policies and procedures.
  • Provide timely and accurate reporting.
  • Maintain effective coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Operate SCADA and related technologies proficiently.
