About The Position

The Distribution Project Engineer at HDR will serve as a project manager for various power distribution projects. This role involves conducting concept, design development, and contract document work sessions at project sites, coordinating with technical professionals and other disciplines. Key responsibilities include preparing or reviewing scopes, budgets, and schedules, as well as handling technical aspects and deliverables for the conceptual and detailed design of overhead and underground electric power distribution systems, distribution system planning, lighting design, grounding, and lightning protection. The engineer will also coordinate the preparation of construction packages, act as a technical expert in power distribution and transmission design, and manage the work of the power design team. The position requires establishing meetings with governing agencies for code compliance, coordinating workload, performing site visits during various project phases, and mentoring junior engineers. Additionally, the role involves reviewing project documents, writing specifications, coordinating addenda, RFIs, and change orders, providing construction contract administration, and implementing project quality control plans.

Requirements

  • A Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related engineering field, and 3 years of experience in engineering for the Power Market Sector, or a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related engineering field, and 5 years of experience in engineering for the Power Market Sector
  • Experience in overhead and underground distribution design, planning, and modeling
  • Experience in preparing plan and profile drawings, specifications, and construction drawings for overhead and underground line projects
  • Experience in development of estimated manhours, cost estimates, and schedules
  • Experience in performing distribution system analysis and design, creating fusing requests, and estimating loads and analyzing cable ampacity following the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)
  • Experience with electrical and planning analysis software CYMCAP, ETAP, or Polywater Pull Planner
  • Experience with CAD software for electrical distribution PLS-CADD, MicroStation, AutoCAD, or ArcGIS
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and Access
  • Must hold Engineer-in-Training certification or must have passed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination
  • Occasional travel within the United States up to four times per year for 2 to 3 days per trip

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a project manager for various power distribution projects
  • Conduct concept, design development, and contract document work sessions at project sites in conjunction with Project Managers, appropriate technical professionals, and other disciplines
  • Prepare or review scopes, budgets, and schedules
  • Prepare or review technical aspects and deliverables associated with the conceptual and detailed design of overhead and underground electric power distribution systems, distribution system planning, lighting design, grounding and lightning protection
  • Coordinate the preparation of construction packages for overhead and underground distribution lines including plan and profile drawings, structure assemblies and details, stringing charts, staking tables, bills of material, and other applicable details
  • Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in power distribution and transmission design, performing assignments and resolving issues of greater scope and complexity
  • Coordinate the work of the power design team through the schematic design development and contract document phase of a project
  • Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance
  • Coordinate workload to complete deliverables on schedule
  • Perform site visits during the design, construction, and as-built phases of projects, including participating in field reviews or construction observation
  • Review work performed by and mentor junior engineers and technical staff
  • Review project documents for areas of conflict with other disciplines
  • Write and edit project specifications
  • Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, requests for information (RFIs), change orders (COs)
  • Take responsibility to incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents
  • Provide construction contract administration, as needed
  • Implement and perform project quality control plans and conduct QA/QC on the work of other Engineers, Project Coordinators or Designers, or BIM Technicians
