About The Position

The Distribution Planning Engineer is responsible for performing system power flow modeling and analytics of the electric distribution system using software such as Synergi and ASPEN Oneliner. The engineer will identify enhancements and expansions to the distribution and substation systems, evaluate interconnection requests for solar PV and battery storage, and assess system impacts. The role also involves supporting regulatory filings, ensuring compliance with utility standards, and providing technical support to field personnel. The engineer will communicate engineering ideas and recommendations to diverse audiences and apply engineering expertise to improve or develop new standards and technology solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Four or more years of engineering experience, or three years with a Fundamentals of Engineering certificate, or three years with a Master's Degree in Engineering.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience in distribution planning modeling software such as Synergi or CYME.
  • Ability to translate electrical theory and physics to utility applications.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply national, state, and local codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and self-motivation.

Nice To Haves

  • Fundamentals of Engineering certificate.
  • Professional Engineers License in the State of New Mexico.
  • Master's Degree in Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Perform system power flow modeling and analytics of the electric distribution system.
  • Identify distribution and substation enhancements and expansions.
  • Evaluate interconnection requests for solar PV, battery storage, and other Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).
  • Evaluate customer service requests and conduct studies to provide service recommendations.
  • Support regulatory filings and grid modernization initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with utility standards and safety regulations.
  • Provide technical support and direction to field personnel and contractors.
  • Communicate engineering ideas and recommendations to diverse audiences.
  • Apply engineering expertise to improve or develop new standards and technology solutions.
