The Line Apprentice position supports the operations process in providing and maintaining service to new and existing customers by learning a working knowledge of computer system, tools, equipment, and material. Employees in the Line Apprentice position will learn the day-to-day operations and specifications of the distribution system. In addition to normal work hours, employees in the Line Apprentice position must be available to be on-call with a more experienced person, as required, and to work all hours, as needed, day or night, weekends or holidays, during planned outages or emergency situations. Employees in the Line Apprentice position must learn to perform all duties in a safe manner and adhere to all company safety rules and procedures. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to pass DOT Physical
  • Ability to obtain DOT Certification
  • A bility to obtain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) in the state for which you are hired within one year of hire
  • Successful background and drug screen
  • Ability to stand a minimum of 5-6 hours; may be on ground, in a bucket on a line truck, or at the top of a distribution pole.
  • Ability to sit for a minimum of 2-3 hours; may be driving a truck or sitting in a manhole or an underground vault.
  • Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 76 pounds
  • Ability to push/pull weights up to 116 pounds
  • Ability to carry up to 90 pounds
  • Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths.
  • Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat.
  • Ability to differentiate between colors (color vision).
  • Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.
  • Ability to successfully complete the Virtual Assessment for Lineworkers (VAL)
  • Ability to successfully complete the Physical Abilities Test (PAT).
  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.
  • This position has a residency requirement. You must reside within a 30-mile or 30-minutes radius of the hiring operations site. New hires must meet these requirements by the end of their 9-month probationary period.

Nice To Haves

  • Certificate from Lineman’s Training School or currently enrolled
  • Certificate from Technical School Line program or currently enrolled
  • Military experience
  • Experience in the electric utility industry
  • Training and/or work experience with climbing different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.)
  • Previous work experience or training working near power lines and electricity (residential, commercial, overhead lines, or underground lines)
  • Experience with responding to natural disasters or emergency situations (storm response such as hurricanes, tornado, wind event, high water; emergency responses such as fires, auto accidents, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Constructs, maintains, and repairs electrical distribution systems, including overhead and underground lines
  • Installs and repairs electrical equipment such as street lighting and load control devices, Constructs overhead and underground distribution lines based on engineering specifications, including setting poles, pulling cable, setting transformers, etc.
  • Installs equipment such as transformers, capacitors, regulators, load control devices, meters, streetlights, safe lights, etc.
  • Maintains and repairs equipment, e.g., checking equipment and performing preventative maintenance using, test equipment such as volt and amp meters to measure the performance of equipment
  • Responds to trouble calls when equipment fails and/or electrical service is interrupted
  • Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally
