The Storage team is building and operating a high performance, scalable, reliable data abstraction layer that optimizes reliability and efficiency. You will help us bootstrap and scale our internal distributed database infrastructure centered around Cassandra, with a focus on reliability, operability, security and efficiency. This infrastructure will be the backbone of a platform that strives to manage itself and disappear in the background, enabling engineers to focus on building product experiences our customers love. You must be located in San Francisco, Sunnyvale, Seattle, or the New York Metro Area for this hybrid position. You will report into the Engineering Manager on our Storage team within the Core Infrastructure Organization. You will have the opportunity to contribute to open-source projects like Apache Cassandra, improving the ecosystem for its community.

  • Help bootstrap internal database infrastructure from the ground up, unlocking new platform capabilities for DoorDash engineers.
  • Build self-managing Cassandra infrastructure that enables high throughput and operational transparency.
  • Collaborate with open-source communities to upstream improvements and innovate within the Cassandra ecosystem.
  • Drive innovation in storage architecture by identifying and addressing scalability and efficiency challenges in distributed systems.
  • Collaborate with teams across infrastructure to evolve capabilities whilst maintaining platform stability.
  • Troubleshoot, debug and learn from interesting production problems at multiple layers of the infrastructure stack.
  • 5+ years of experience in designing, building and maintaining scalable, distributed data infrastructure.
  • Deep expertise in NoSQL databases (Cassandra, DynamoDB, or similar).
  • Experience managing large fleets of database clusters, including building tools, monitoring, capacity planning, backups and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Strong understanding of JVM internals including memory management and concurrency.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, execution-driven environment with a proven track record of delivering impactful storage solutions.
  • Contributed to or are interested in contributing to open-source distributed database projects.
