About The Position

As a Distinguished Engineer, Software Engineering (DNS), you will play a critical role in defining the technical direction of our products and systems while leading our DDI (DNS, DHCP, IPAM) team. You'll work closely with cross-functional partners-including network architecture, network engineering, and compute teams-to drive innovation and ensure the delivery of high-quality, scalable, and resilient DNS services. Your technical leadership will support Walmart's vast infrastructure, spanning stores, offices, logistics facilities, and our rapidly expanding private cloud. In this role, you will also mentor and guide engineering professionals, fostering a culture of technical excellence. About Team: Global Technology Network Engineering and Operations Team Building the right technology foundation for Infrastructure & platforms is vital to success at the scale of Walmart. Our team builds and maintains the foundational technologies that support the tech organization. Included in this are data platforms, enterprise architecture, DevOps, cloud computing, and infrastructure. All of these products and services are supported by scalable and powerful infrastructure, ensuring a secure and seamless employee and customer experience across stores, digital channels, and distribution centers. The Network Engineering and Operations (NEO) team is responsible for the design, engineering, and day-to-day operations of Walmart's global network and DNS infrastructure. As part of Walmart Global Tech, we work closely with specialized teams focused on wired and wireless networking, data center connectivity, and interconnection architecture. Together, we ensure the performance, reliability, and scalability of the systems that power Walmart's worldwide operations. Requirements

  • Customer-First Mindset: A strategic, entrepreneurial approach with a strong focus on delivering value to end users.
  • Deep DNS Expertise: Strong understanding of DNS and DHCP protocols, standards, and operational best practices, including experience with large-scale deployments and hybrid infrastructure environments.
  • Automation & Engineering Skills: Hands-on experience with DNS automation, along with a strong foundation in scalable systems design, software and systems engineering, advanced problem-solving, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Effective Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization-from engineers to executives.
  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 6 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Option 2: 8 years' experience in software engineering or related area.

Responsibilities

  • Lead DNS Strategy and Vision: Define and drive the long-term vision, strategy, and roadmap for Walmart's DNS infrastructure, ensuring it is scalable, resilient, and cost-effective.
  • Architect and Evolve Infrastructure: Design and guide the deployment of high-performance DNS systems, identifying opportunities to modernize and optimize existing infrastructure.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Work cross-functionally with platform, network, and compute teams to align DNS initiatives with broader technology and business goals.
  • Engage with the Ecosystem: Represent Walmart's DNS needs with vendors and open-source communities, influencing product direction and integration strategies.
  • Mentor and Inspire: Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers, fostering a collaborative, high-performing team culture.
  • Drive Innovation and Research: Conduct proof-of-concepts, evaluate emerging technologies, and make strategic recommendations to keep Walmart at the forefront of DNS innovation.
  • Communicate and Document: Translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences and document architectural decisions, best practices, and design patterns for organizational knowledge sharing.
