About The Position

This is a paid internship that is part of Heaven Hill's Summer Internship Program (running May-August). The role is based at our Heaven Hill Springs Distillery in Bardstown, KY. As part of the Heaven Hill Summer Internship Program, you will support organizational strategic goals through hands-on project work and high-impact assignments. Our program is designed to provide meaningful experience, professional development, cross-functional exposure, networking opportunities, facility tours, and intern engagement events throughout the summer. The Springs Distillery Quality Control Internship offers immersive experience in analytical testing, laboratory operations, and distillery QC/QA practices. This role is ideal for students interested in chemistry, fermentation science, distillation science, or quality systems. You will contribute to quality improvement and plant optimization projects, learn to run routine lab analyses, assist with new test development, troubleshoot testing inconsistencies, and support data collection that improves distillery performance. Projects can be tailored to the intern’s specific interests, promoting innovation and fresh perspective within Springs’ quality operations.

Requirements

  • Currently a junior or senior pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Fermentation Science, Distillation Science, Food Science, or related field.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn new scientific techniques, testing methods, and lab protocols.
  • Ability to work independently with clear instructions and collaborate with operations and QC staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Laboratory or production experience preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to operate, maintain, and calibrate lab equipment, including HPLC, brix testing tools, sensory materials, and grain analysis instrumentation.
  • Perform routine QC analysis and accurately document results to support daily production needs.
  • Troubleshoot testing inconsistencies and propose improvements to ensure data repeatability and accuracy.
  • QC-driven projects will be assigned based on operational priorities and intern interest areas. Project areas include: Grain analysis Fermentation and Yeasting Sensory Program Implementation Analytical Correlation Work Wastewater and Environmental Cross-site collaboration between Bernheim and Springs
  • Prepare and present findings and recommendations to internal teams throughout the internship.
  • Deliver a final presentation to the Executive Leadership Team summarizing your project work and key learnings.
  • Participate in developmental workshops, networking opportunities, and cross-functional exposure events.
