About The Position

The Dispatcher Trainee position is an entry-level role responsible for operating the 911 dispatch console to receive emergency calls and dispatch emergency personnel. This role is designed for individuals without previous 911 dispatch experience, and employees are expected to complete a training program and obtain necessary certifications within twelve months. The position involves working under immediate supervision and is a stepping stone to becoming a fully qualified Dispatcher.

Requirements

• Ability to pass a background investigation and maintain certification to operate NCIC, CJIS and related computers.
• Knowledge of techniques for communicating with people in distress and basic computer procedures.
• Ability to tend to multiple tasks simultaneously and communicate clearly over telephone and radio.
• Familiarity with basic law enforcement terms and radio codes.

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience in a customer service role or emergency services is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Receive 911 telephone calls and solicit information regarding the nature and location of emergencies.
• Provide emergency instructions to callers and determine the priority of response to the call.
• Dispatch emergency units and relay information to and from emergency response units.
• Respond to radio calls from law enforcement and emergency personnel in the field.
• Perform computer record searches and check warrant status on field detainees.
• Maintain logs of all calls received and made, and operate tape recording equipment.
• Process complaints and complete reports regarding complaint information.
• Handle information requests and provide information to requesters as authorized.
• Process reports and warrants, entering data into law enforcement information systems.
• Assist in jail administration functions, including controlling movement of individuals in the jail.
