The University of California, Berkeley Library is seeking a creative, collaborative, and user-centered Discovery Librarian to enhance the Library's discovery services and support world-class research and teaching. This position is designed to make the Library's discovery platform, services, and tools more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming to the campus community. The Discovery Librarian will leverage product knowledge and expertise in user behavior to identify usage patterns in the Library's discovery products, recommend improvements, and deploy enhancements to the user experience. This role aligns with the Library's mission to provide access to scholarly resources by integrating digital collections, datasets, and services into the Library's discovery environment. The UC Berkeley Library is a prestigious teaching and research facility serving a diverse campus community of 30,000 undergraduate students, over 11,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty members. With a collection exceeding 13 million volumes and a budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive resources in various formats and robust services to connect users with these collections. The Library Information Technology (Library IT) Division is responsible for the design, development, management, and maintenance of technology environments for the Library, including digital collections and services, digital preservation tools, and a user-friendly library web presence. The Discovery Librarian will work within the Systems and Discovery Services Department, which supports Berkeley's Integrated Library System (ILS) Alma and the Primo VE discovery service. This role involves collaborating with stakeholders to ensure seamless access to Library collections, identifying pain points, and developing user-centered access and discovery practices. The Discovery Librarian will also oversee configurations related to Discovery in Alma, troubleshoot user-reported issues, and conduct usability testing to enhance the user interface of UC Library Search. Additionally, the incumbent will integrate web accessibility best practices into user experience decisions and ensure compliance with ADA and WCAG guidelines. As the lead for UC Library Search, the Discovery Librarian will participate in local governance and steering committees, facilitate the Library Discovery Working Group, and represent UC Berkeley Library in system-wide operations. Regular analytics reporting will support data-driven decisions for the Library, and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to library-wide planning and governance while demonstrating a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
