About The Position

The Disability Specialist at UCLA plays a crucial role in supporting students with disabilities, ensuring they have equal access to educational resources and opportunities. This position is part of the Center for Accessible Education (CAE), which is dedicated to facilitating accommodations across various aspects of student life, including academics, housing, and transportation. The specialist will engage with students to promote personal growth and academic success while contributing to a vibrant community within UCLA Student Affairs.

Requirements

  • Professional experience in post-secondary settings with students who have disabilities.
  • Working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
  • Knowledge and ability to provide counseling on disability management and compensatory strategies for students with disabilities.
  • Ability to organize and teach workshops and support groups for students with disabilities.
  • Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact sensitively with students and colleagues.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of UC Guidelines and Practices as they pertain to students with disabilities.
  • Working knowledge of assessment instruments and psycho-educational reports used to diagnose specific learning disabilities.
  • Knowledge of adaptive computer technology and specialized software.
  • Ability to assist in general office functions when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate academic, housing, dining, and transportation accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Determine student eligibility for disability accommodations and services.
  • Organize and teach workshops and support groups for students with disabilities.
  • Provide counseling on disability management and compensatory strategies.
  • Collaborate with individuals, departments, and organizations on and off campus.
  • Communicate effectively with students and campus colleagues to convey information and support needs.
  • Assist in general office functions as needed.
