About The Position

The Disability Examiner Trainee (Administrator I) position within the Colorado Department of Human Services is responsible for determining medical eligibility for disability benefits for Colorado residents. This role involves analyzing and evaluating case information to ensure compliance with Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) regulations. The position requires gathering medical information, preparing assessments, and documenting decisions to justify disability claims. The role is hybrid, requiring two days of onsite work per week.

Requirements

  • Four years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position.
  • Experience in a highly regulated environment where policy evaluation and application are required, such as claims adjusting, case management, or paralegal work.

Responsibilities

  • Determine medical eligibility for disability benefits under the SSDI/SSI Program by gathering, evaluating, and analyzing medical and non-medical data.
  • Independently review and analyze evidence of illness, injury, disease, or other medical conditions and vocational factors that prevent individuals from working.
  • Prepare medical and psychological assessments to expedite the initial determination of disability.
  • Document disability decisions by citing legal references from Social Security regulations and writing rationale to justify decisions.
  • Interview applicants and professionals to obtain necessary information and explain Social Security disability programs to various stakeholders.
  • Authorize the purchase of medical exams, tests, and procedures from healthcare providers.
